5th Grade Spanish
The purpose of this course is to build a solid foundation in the Spanish Language with an early focus on oral interaction, leading to studies of the written language. We will develop the skills required to read simple texts as well as write simple passages. Beginning language courses must be engaging and exciting, many Total Physical Response (TPR) exercises will be used, and students will be engaged in listening and speaking activities. The course includes songs, games, stories, conversation, oral comprehension, vocabulary, cultural awareness, grammatical concepts, reading and writing. A wide variety of activities and learning materials are used to enhance student learning.
Course Content
q Conversation includes practice in a variety of real-life situations, such as greetings, introductions, descriptions, the asking for and giving of information, and more.
q Basic vocabulary includes parts of the body, basic commands, classroom objects, days of the week, alphabet, greetings, prepositions, basic conversational phrases, colors, clothing, numbers 1-1000, animals, and other general vocabulary.
q Grammatical concepts include sentence structure, pronouns, the forming of plural nouns and adjectives, definite and indefinite articles, and the use of adjectives and prepositions.
q Direct phonics instruction and reading comprehension of a variety of short texts and storybooks are the foundation of the reading program. Students will learn reading strategies and increase their vocabulary and interest in reading in Spanish.
q Writing will begin at the syllable level and develop to the sentence level, with emphasis on communicating ideas, creativeness, and applying the concepts and vocabulary studied in class.
Class Expectations
q Class participation includes working cooperatively with peers, full participation in class activities, respectfulness towards adults and peers, and applying knowledge and skills in class.
q Homework will be assigned on a regular basis and must be turned in on time.
Effort Grade
Students will receive and effort grade to assess the quality of both their behavior and preparation of assigned work, using a scale from one to five, with five being the highest.
