I started studying Japanese at Charles Wright with Yasuko Wada as my teacher. She continues to be a terrific mentor for me today! I am a graduate of the class of '86.  My studies at the University of Washington lead me to double major in Japanese Language and Literature and Economics. I fell in love with Japan after heading to Tokyo and Kyoto on a scholarship to study trade issues.  The world of traditional culture I saw and felt in Kyoto lead me into further cultural studies including the Japanese tea ceremony, Chado.  After completing the teaching certification program at UW, Bonnie Mitchell, teacher at the Urasenke School of Tea in Seattle, took me to Japan where she introduced me to her Tea teacher in Kyoto. I lived in Omihachiman, near Kyoto,  for almost three years studying Tea Ceremony weekly.

My love of Outdoor Education also began at CWA with my 8th grade beach hike and subsequent school outings. A semester trip with NOLS in Baja, Mexico in 1994 deepened my love of outdoor adventuring as well as my interest in outdoor leadership. I began teaching at CWA in 1994 where I have had many great trips leading sophomore hikes as well as a few 8th grade trips. I have alternated between Outdoor adventures(Havasu Canyon, Baja, Hawaii, Yellowstone) and Japan trips for Winterim offerings.
