Just scroll down to the bottom. :)
Step 1 - Learning about the Harlem Renaissance
- You will be spending time exploring the Harlem Renaissance and thinking about the following questions as you take notes:
- What was the Harlem Renaissance?
- Why was it important?
- Who are some of the people who were involved in the Renaissance?
- How did they contribute?
- What interests me most about the Harlem Renaissance?
- You will complete a worksheet using notes provided to you by Ms. Valentine. When your worksheet is complete, you will move on to step 2....
Step 2: Selecting a Topic
- You will complete a topic selection sheet (the third and fourth pages of the Harlem Renaissance Packet#1 you received) by exploring four areas of the Harlem Renaissance you would like to study during this unit.
- You will include information about why you would like to study each area.
- Ms. Harris and Ms. Valentine will assign a person for you to study, based on your interest in each area of the Harlem Renaissance.
- NOTE: Using Wikipedia to explore a topic is appropriate. However, you may not use Wikipedia as a source for ANY R.A.D. forms.
Step 3: Researching your Topic
- Trusted sources for research:
- Books from the library
- The Harlem Renaissance from John Carroll University
- Harlem 1900 -1940 from the New York Public Library
- Oxford African American Studies Center
- A List of Awesome Resources from the Library of Congress
- A Place Called Harlem from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts
- Blackpast.org from the University of Washington
- You will complete 1 R.A.D. form on the Harlem Renaissance using a trusted source.
- You will complete at least 2 R.A.D. forms on your person. You will be required to take complete and comprehensive notes (which means you will probably use extra paper for each R.A.D. form).
- Your R.A.D. forms must have complete, detailed notes. You will probably need extra pieces of paper stapled to your form for all the notes. Your two R.A.D. forms must be from separate sources.
- Your R.A.D. forms must be from trusted resources. You will need to use books from the library, databases or Internet sources selected by or approved by Ms. Harris or Ms. Valentine. USE THE LIST OF RESOURCES ABOVE. NOTE: This means you will not be searching the "free" web for this assignment. If you think you need to do so, get approval from Ms. Harris or Ms. Valentine first.
- At least ONE RAD form must be from the Oxford African American Studies Center.
Step 4: Planning your Graphic Novel
- Ms. Lara's web page: Comic Life information
- You will create a graphic novel, using Comic Life to document three areas of your persons life: early life, experience during the Harlem Renaissance, later life. You will need to include the following:
- At least three pieces of factual information about your person, based on your research.
- At least three pieces of factual information about the Harlem Renaissance, based on your research.
- Before you get to work on Comic Life, you will create an outline, script and plan for your graphic novel. Your graphic novel will include a title page and three additional pages, one for each section of your person's life.
- Your last page will be your bibliography.
- As always, proper grammar, spelling, format, etc. will be required. Please see the assignment guidelines and rubric if you have questions.
Step 5: Bibliography
- You will be required to complete an MLA style bibliography in the proper format. Please refer to the sample project and the bibliography style sheet given to you or linked here:
